Transmission Line Engineer
Job Description: Experience in Transmission Line Design with an Electric Utility or an Engineering, Procurement and Construction Company (EPC). Demonstrated able to:
- With general scoping information, develop a transmission line design layout and routing;
- Utilize and incorporate engineering standards into design of transmission line lay out and structures
- Independently develop PLS-CADD models for transmission design projects, including line spans, plan and profile representations; and transmission structure designs consistent with applicable tension, sag, and weather loadings;
- Handle complex projects without supervision;
- Coordinate with people from other departments involved in a design project;
- Supervise and mentor less experienced Transmission Line Engineers;
- Check and validate drawings for the project and the drawings of peers and subordinates.
Considered a “subject matter expert” for Transmission Line Design. Must possess excellent skills in PLS-CADD or similar applications.
The Transmission Line Engineer shall be responsible for the engineering and design activities related to transmission line design. The responsibilities shall include, but are not limited to, engineering analysis and design, route selection, material acquisition, structural and foundation design, and project and construction management. Specific tasks include the preparation of project construction documents such as: plan and profile drawings; design drawings; engineering, material, and construction specifications; project schedules and bills of material. Tasks also include developing project design alternatives and corresponding cost estimates.
In general, the Transmission Line Engineer will be designing new transmission facilities with voltages between 138 kV and 345 kV, or higher, and with span lengths often between 600 and 700 feet. The Transmission Line Engineer will utilize PLS-CADD to model transmission line design projects.
The Transmission Line Engineer must be able to work effectively with both internal and external customers, including Project Management, Substation Design, Distribution, Supply Chain and Right-of-Way; must be able to coordinate effectively with governmental and regulatory agencies and contractors to secure project permits; and must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills to facilitate adhering to project schedule and budget. The Transmission Line Engineer must be able to conduct contractor bid and construction meetings and assist in ensuring that work activities are performed safely and in accordance with plans and established schedules, and in accordance with policies, rules and standards, and in compliance with external regulations. The Transmission Line Engineer must be able to provide leadership to facilitate project completion, to train and mentor other engineers, and to develop measurable work area goals and objectives.
